I cycle the coastal route from Den Haag to Den Helder over several days. I already walked part of this route the year before as training for the Nordkalottleden. With the wind in my hair, sand between my toes, and cold seawater up to my ears, I reflect on the past year.

Donderdag
The day starts grey and drizzly, so I take it slow and begin in Den Haag instead of Hoek van Holland. From Scheveningen, I follow the coast toward Katwijk with a favorable tailwind pushing me through the dunes. Physically, it’s confronting, I feel strong, yet I’m reminded of my limitations and how different this feels from walking here last year. By the time I reach Noordwijkerhout, I treat myself to a snack before settling into a spacious campsite. Cooking a simple meal with fresh rosemary from the camping garden, I end the day feeling content and grateful to be out here.
Vrijdag
I wake up to the quiet competition of a campsite coming to life and slowly pack up. A curious cat briefly takes over my tent before I continue cycling through the dunes past Zandvoort and Bloemendaal. Crossing the water at Velsen by ferry, the landscape shifts before I arrive in Egmond. Here I stay via Welcome to My Garden, where I’m warmly welcomed by hosts who offer tea, a comfortable place to camp, and great conversation. The evening turns into a cozy night filled with stories, wine, and genuine hospitality.
Zaterdag
After a restless night, I continue through the Schoorl dunes, which despite their reputation, don’t quite live up to my expectations, especially with the weekend crowds. After a coffee stop, I follow the long coastal stretch toward Petten and beyond. Finding accommodation proves tricky during the holiday weekend, and I end up at a simple mini campsite lacking charm and comfort. In the evening, I cycle back to the beach for a quiet picnic and wait for sunset. Despite the cold and a dying phone, the sky explodes into vibrant colors, making the wait more than worthwhile.
Zondag
I take it easy in the morning, letting my gear dry before heading out for the final stretch to Den Helder. The town feels quiet, with limited options open, so I settle for a simple coffee before picking up lunch at the supermarket. At the station, I discover all bike spots on the train are fully booked—proof that I’m not the only one drawn to a coastal adventure this weekend.
